I’ve always been a story maker. I wrote and illustrated my first book People Are Like Lollipops, (Holiday House) before I was of legal age to sign the contract. Lollipops was followed by ten other books. I am a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), emphasis on writer.
For decades I identified as a teen advice-giver and a writer of computer games, screenplays, children’s plays, and juvenile non-fiction. But when COVID hit, words weren’t enough and I turned to art to stay connected with my 5-year-old grandson. Our virtual step-by-step art sessions energized my inner illustrator.
Since then I’ve devoted full time to exploring the interplay between words and images in service to story. As a writer I know a story has its own lifeforce. Sit with it long enough and the story reveals how it wants to be told. Now, as a writer/illustrator I ask myself: What needs to be said? What doesn’t need to be said? What needs to be shown? When I effectively answer those questions I choreograph a dance between words and images and invite young readers to enter, take off their shoes, and feed their imaginations.
When I’m not making stories, you can find me hiking throughout the San Francisco Bay Area,  traveling much farther afield, and making photos in the vain attempt to capture magic.
